Applications are invited for admission to the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University of Calcutta (92 Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road, Kolkata 700009) for Ph.D. Course and subsequent research work leading to Ph.D. degree in Computer Science & Engineering under the Faculty of Technology. Candidates who wish to pursue research work through this Department should apply in the prescribed proforma by paying Rs. 100/- through a challan available through different University Cash counters. The proforma for application is available in the University website. The challan is to be duly forwarded through the HoD, Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The completed application form with a copy of the paid challan is to be submitted in the office of the Department by February 14, 2013. The eligible candidates will have to appear in a written MCQ examination to be held in this Department to be held on March 16, 2013. The successful candidates will be called for an interview to be held on April 4-5, 2013. The final selection for joining this Department as a Ph.D. student will be on the basis of this interview. At present a maximum of 15 Ph.D. students (reservation is applicable as per the University reservation policy) will be taken, if found suitable. The allocation of supervisor will also be on the basis of this interview. All the applicants except those who have already passed UGC/ CSIR (JRF) examinations /NET /SET /SLET /GATE /Teacher Fellowship or equivalent examinations or completed the M. Tech./M.E. degree in Computer Science & Engineering or equivalent examination are to appear at the written examination.

Eligibility: M.E./M.Tech./ Post B.Sc. – B.Tech/B.Tech. /B.E. in Computer Science & Engineering, MCA.

A candidate with B. Tech. /B.E. may also apply for the program as per provision laid down in the section 4.4 of the Ph.D. regulations. The same criteria would also be applicable for MCA students.

The final semester/year students for the above qualifying courses may also apply. However, such candidates, if selected, must complete their qualifying degree before the date of enrolment.

Syllabus for the Test: The questions for the admission test and interview will be based on topics of the following areas: Discrete Mathematics, Operating Systems, Data Structure, Algorithms, Computer Networks, Database Management Systems, Programming Languages (C, C++, Java), Computer Architecture. However, the interview will be primarily based on the research emphasis of the candidate.
